"Warriors" Karmic's powerful anthem for Equal

If you haven’t heard of Karmic—the Los Angeles-based indie electronic pop group fronted by Laura Baruch and Kyle Tkatch—or their powerful anthem “Warriors,” it’s not too late.

While Karmic released “Warriors” back in 2018, Bad Owl recently partnered with Music Box Licensing to land a placement for the song in the official trailer for Equal. Narrated by Emmy-winner Billy Porter, the docu-series follows the events leading up to the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. All four episodes of Equal are out now via HBO Max.

Although Karmic’s music has been featured on numerous commercials, trailers, and television programs, this sync placement really resonated on a personal level for Karmic and the whole Bad Owl team. “Just seeing the trailer made us so emotional,” Karmic admitted. “We are extremely grateful that they chose our song. HBO did a really good job with the whole thing. The actors in it are very talented and they are all in the LGBTQ community, which we think is important.”

Furthermore, the “Warriors” lyrics are remarkably fitting for Equal’s trailer, and in Karmic’s own words, here’s why: “This song works for anyone who has to fight for equality because so many people do, especially the LGBTQ community. We are still fighting to this day, which is heartbreaking, but we are strong individuals and we can’t stop, won’t stop until it’s done.”

The Karmic ladies said of creating the track: “Sometimes when you write a song it takes time to finish, but with ‘Warriors’ it flowed out all at once and we finished it quickly. Probably because the song is about women and what we have gone through and still go through after all these years. We had to fight for equality for a long time and now we are finally getting it. This is definitely for all the women before us who paved the way. We are immensely grateful for them and all the work that they have done—we wouldn’t be here without them.” The fierce energy that Karmic displays on “Warriors” will leave you feeling absolutely invigorated and optimistic.

In other recent news, Karmic’s single “Summertime’s Gone” was released in July ahead of their highly anticipated, first full-length album, due next year. Following the band’s 2019 debut EP, This is Karmic, their new track is a deceptively joyful and lighthearted ditty. It shines a somewhat melancholy and contemplative light on a deeply divided country and a population in turmoil and disarray. Airy acoustic guitars and ethereal vocal layers provide a counterpoint to thrumming 808s, creating the backbone for a song that casts an unflinching gaze on the state of current day America. Its message is ultimately redemptive: that only the power of love can bring about the systemic change required to heal our political, social and economic divisions.
