A Bad Owl Christmas Story

Bad Owl Records has had quite an eventful holiday season.

With the assistance of Bad Owl producer, Samuel Murphy, two of our favorite artists, Megan Kinney and Skylar Funk, have been collaborating and developing the sound for their brand new project over the last year and a half. Although quarantine slowed them down a bit, they are in a groove now and Bad Owl is over the moon to introduce Cadence and Wyld and their beautiful music to the world. It’s where earnest folk melody meets soundscape space exploration. It’s where a steady heartbeat meets the instinct to adventure into the unknown.

In late November, the songwriting duo released their debut single, “Morning Song.” Shortly thereafter, Bad Owl landed Cadence and Wyld’s first sync placement in Episode 6 of “12 Dates of Christmas” on HBO Max.

Recently renewed for a second season due to popular demand, the premise of “12 Dates of Christmas” is as follows: single individuals travel to a castle in Austria where their primary goal is to find a date to bring home for the holidays. “Morning Song” plays during a pivotal moment in Episode 6, as the main characters are about to decide who their special someone will be. The song, which is about weary love and holding on with a hopeful attitude, fits perfectly here. “I believe in wondrous things to come,” Megan Kinney and Skylar Funk softly sing over an airy acoustic guitar. The tune is powerful on its own, and when heard in the context of the show, it comes alive even more.

Cadence and Wyld recently performed “Morning Song” and another unreleased original, “Brother Picking,” on Blck Table Music, a live music series where artists play at a dining room table. Kinney and Funk’s stripped down, authentic performance is undoubtedly worth checking out. Plus, Cadence and Wyld are currently planning new releases for 2021, so stay tuned.

In the theme of holiday spirit, it is only appropriate to reintroduce Bad Owl’s Christmas EP, A Bad Owl Christmas, initially released in 2019. Created entirely by Bad Owl artists, Karmic, Megan Kinney, and Skylar Funk, the four-track EP includes: “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Auld Lang Syne.”

A Bad Owl Christmas is out on all streaming platforms to help lift spirits and send us off gracefully into the new year.
